Why this market is different
The Miami metro runs on self-employment. Freelancers, contractors, hospitality workers, small business owners, and gig workers make up an unusually large share of the workforce, and many have no employer plan to fall back on. That is why South Florida sees such heavy HealthCare.gov enrollment activity every open enrollment. The individual market is not a niche here. For many residents, it is the market.
The federal marketplace, South Florida edition
Florida uses the federal marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Plans are grouped into metal levels, Bronze through Platinum, describing how costs are shared between you and the insurer. Depending on household income and size, some shoppers qualify for federal help with monthly premiums. With so much variable and seasonal income in this region, estimating household income accurately matters more here than almost anywhere else in Florida. It is worth doing with a licensed professional rather than guessing.
When you can enroll
Open enrollment runs each fall for coverage starting January 1. Outside that window, qualifying life events, a permanent move, loss of other coverage, marriage, or a new baby, can open a special enrollment period of roughly 60 days. South Florida's constant churn of new arrivals means move-triggered special enrollment is common here. If you recently landed, ask soon.
Networks across the tri-county area
South Florida has large hospital systems spanning Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, and plan networks do not always cover all three counties equally. If you live in one county and see doctors in another, say so explicitly. A plan that looks great on premium can turn expensive if your specialists sit outside its network. Name your doctors and your preferred hospitals in your first conversation so network fit gets checked before anything else.
Dental coverage in South Florida
Dental plans follow their own timing and can start any time of year. Because HealthCare.gov only sells stand-alone dental plans alongside a health plan, dental-only shoppers typically compare off-exchange options. As with health coverage, check waiting periods on major work and the annual maximum, and bring any treatment plan your dentist has given you.
What to compare
- Network coverage across the counties where you actually get care.
- How your household income estimate affects premium help eligibility.
- Total yearly cost, not just the monthly premium.
- Prescription coverage for any regular medications.
